About César

Showcasing the journey and work of an Ecuadorian journalist dedicated to ethical storytelling and impactful media.

Experience

Before I refer to and go off about me, truthful to my values, I like to remember where I am from. My journey started when I met my high school Spanish literature teacher, Miss Guisella Vulgarin; she showed me the passion and beauty of journalism. Ever since, I have gone from being President of the journalism club in the Colegio Americano de Guayaquil to moving to Canada to step out of my comfort zone and learn as much as I can.

Journalism & Storytelling

As a journalist, I believe that storytelling is more than just reporting facts—it’s about understanding the people behind them. In my role as Sports Editor, I don’t just pitch, write, and edit stories; I support and mentor the writers in my section. I provide detailed feedback on every article, often creating Word documents with specific suggestions and corrections so writers can see exactly how their work can improve—even before it reaches the editor-in-chief.

I care deeply about the stories I write. I prefer to conduct interviews in person, fostering trust and engagement with my subjects. A good story isn’t just about what happened—it’s about why it happened and how people feel about it. I have navigated sensitive situations where interviewees were hesitant to share their stories, ensuring that they felt comfortable and understood. At times, I’ve gone off the record to build trust, always making it clear that my goal is to report the truth, not to portray anyone unfairly.

Beyond writing, I’ve expanded into multimedia journalism, producing and editing post-game interviews for social media. I’ve covered a range of sports, from hockey to pickleball, researching extensively to understand each sport and connect with the athletes. I work closely with my editorial team, valuing collaboration and stepping back when necessary to ensure the best outcome for our work. I consider myself a natural leader, always looking for ways to improve and innovate.

My dedication to journalism goes beyond writing—I want to understand every aspect of the field. That’s why I not only appear on camera but also work behind it, filming and editing my own videos. I believe that to be the best journalist, I need to grasp every element of storytelling, from production to final presentation.

Communications & Digital Media

At the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, I’ve had the opportunity to apply my storytelling skills in a different setting. As a Communications and Marketing Assistant, I create content for social media, producing and editing videos that highlight the artists in residence. I don’t just document their work; I explore their backgrounds, motivations, and creative processes to bring their stories to life.

I also manage social media captions and engagement, continuously refining my approach to better connect with audiences. While I’ve faced challenges in adapting to Instagram storytelling, I actively seek ways to improve, always striving to create meaningful content.

Beyond my official responsibilities, I embrace collaboration. Whether it’s assisting other departments or engaging with visitors at gallery events, I approach every interaction with enthusiasm. I respect people’s comfort with being on camera and ensure they feel at ease, adjusting my approach as needed.

Through my experiences in journalism and communications, I’ve grown into a storyteller who values integrity, creativity, and continuous learning. From starting as a volunteer writer to becoming a sports editor and media producer, my journey has been driven by a relentless passion for storytelling in all its forms.
